Press Release

Seattle metropolitan area continues showing its Sounders pride for Western Conference Championship

Waterfront

Sounders FC today announced a number of civic activations scheduled to take place throughout the Puget Sound region in the coming days, as community institutions join with the club to spread excitement and pride around the greater metropolitan area surrounding the Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs Western Conference Championship.

Area landmarks are set to glow green, fly team flags and otherwise showcase their Sounders pride as the team prepares for Thursday’s showdown against Houston at CenturyLink Field (7:30 p.m. PT / ESPN, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM).

COMMUNITY ACTIVATIONS

  • All Washington State Ferries traveling into and out of Seattle’s Coleman Dock on Wednesday, November 29 and Thursday, November 30 are flying Sounders FC flags as the club prepares to defend the Western Conference title.
  • The much-belovedFremont Troll – a mixed media public sculpture designed by artists Steve Badanes, Will Martin, Donna Walter and Ross Whitehead – is ready to #DefendOurCup and show his Sounders spirit as he dons a Troll-sized scarf on Wednesday, November 29 and Thursday, November 30. Fans are encouraged to stop by Troll’s Knoll Park for this one-of-a-kind Seattle photo op.
  • Iconic event venue The Showbox is scheduled to display Sounders messaging on its First Avenue marquee on Wednesday, November 29, encouraging the city to rally behind the club’s fight toward back-to-back titles.

LIGHTING ACTIVATIONS

  • The Russell Investments Center, through building owner CommonWealth Partners, is set to light up the city’s waterfront with a special Sounders FC-themed lighting on the evenings of Wednesday, November 29 and Thursday, November 30.

The building debuted its Sounders design during the Western Conference Semifinals earlier this month and will once again display the special “Born In ‘74” tribute, complete with an 18-story “74” shining brightly in the windows along its west façade. The display should be fully visible each night by 5:00 p.m. PT, roughly 40 minutes after sunset.
  • The SR 520 bridge is scheduled to light its sentinels Rave Green on Wednesday, November 29 and Thursday, November 30.
  • Jonathan Borofsky’s Hammering Man, located in front of Seattle Art Museum at the corner of First Avenue and University Street, throws his support behind the hometown team on the evening of Wednesday, November 29, as he glows Rave Green.
  • MOHAI – The Museum of History & Industry – is scheduled to light up South Lake Union’s waterfront on Thursday, November 30 as the institution’s building-front glows Rave Green in support of its hometown soccer team.
  • Columbia Center is set to “go green” in its efforts to support Sounders FC on Wednesday, November 29 and Thursday, November 30.
  • CenturyLink Field and its recognizable arches are scheduled to light Rave Green on Wednesday, November 29 and Thursday, November 30.
  • The Seattle Great Wheel will shine with Sounders FC-themed light shows on Wednesday, November 29 and Thursday, November 30, courtesy of designer Gerry Hall.

Following its 2-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo in last week’s first leg of the Western Conference Championship, Sounders FC returns home to close out the series this Thursday evening on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field (7:30 p.m. PT / ESPN, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM).

The club currently anticipates one of the largest postseason crowds in franchise history and every fan is encouraged to come be a part of history as the Rave Green look to win the West in front of the home crowd and secure a place in the 2017 MLS Cup Final. Single-match tickets for the November 30 match are available at SoundersFC.com/Playoffs and are also for sale at the CenturyLink Field box office.

The Conference Championship is held over two legs, with aggregate goals determining which team moves on to the 2017 MLS Cup. In the event that both teams score an equal number of goals over the course of the two matches, the team with the greater number of road goals for the series advances. Should the series be tied for both total goals and away goals, the teams play two 15-minute periods of extra time at the conclusion of the second leg in which away goals do not count. This is followed by penalty kicks, if necessary, to determine the winner.
