RECAP: Sounders fall 1-0 on the road against the Colorado Rapids

GE202290

The Colorado Rapids defeated the Seattle Sounders 1-0 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo., on Sunday evening.

After a goalless first half bereft of many clear-cut chances, Colorado found the breakthrough in the 50th minute. Jonathan Lewis tapped home a ball on the doorstep that was on its way in off Yeimar, who was unlucky to have a Stefan Frei save deflect off him.

The Sounders’ best chance came just five minutes later when a miscue at the back led to a Jordan Morris breakaway, but his chipped effort was cleared away by Lalas Abubakar.

The Sounders had a penalty shout in the 66th minute when Raúl Ruidíaz was taken down in the box. The referee went to Video Review but stuck with his on-field decision and did not award the PK.

Ruidíaz had another chance in the 89th minute, but his left-footed strike aiming for the far post was saved by William Yarbrough.

THREE TAKEAWAYS

Six-point week

Despite the loss on Sunday, the Sounders still ended their three-match week with a productive six points. Seattle entered last weekend with just seven points from eight games while juggling Concacaf Champions League early on this season.

Rapids strong at home

Getting a result in Colorado is no easy feat. The Rapids are now unbeaten in 23 consecutive home matches (14-0-9) in the MLS regular season dating back to April 24, 2021. That streak is tied for fourth-longest in MLS history.

Five-match homestand

The Sounders will head back to Seattle ahead of a huge five-match stretch at Lumen Field. The Sounders will start with a match against 2022 MLS expansion side Charlotte FC next Sunday (6:30 p.m. PT; FS1, FOX Deportes, 93.3 KJR FM, El Rey 1360 AM | TICKETS) and won’t go on the road again until July 2.
