The Seattle Sounders fell 3-0 at Liga MX’s Toluca FC in Mexico City on Wednesday night in their first Phase One match of the 2026 Leagues Cup. Jesús Gallardo opened the scoring early before Helinho and Federico Viñas iced the match in the second half.
Toluca took an early lead inside three minutes when Gallardo rose for a free header on an Alexis Vega corner and sent it past Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei.
Frei made an immaculate save in the 16th minute off another corner when Vega dropped a pass to the top of the box for Franco Romero, whose one-timed effort was poised for the top corner before Frei dove to parry it over the crossbar.
The Sounders’ first bona fide look at goal came one minute later when Jesús Ferreira played a beautiful ball in behind for Osaze De Rosario, but a sliding save by goalkeeper Luis García kept Toluca in front.
Frei came up massive again in the 27th minute when he won a 1-v-1 battle with Jesús Ángulo, who had an open look at the far post. Ángulo looked destined to score from close range, but Frei got big to deflect the shot wide for a corner.
Frei made his third outstanding save in the 33rd minute when Vega cut through the box and unleashed a shot that Frei dove for and pushed over the bar for a corner.
Toluca nearly doubled their lead again in the 36th minute when Jorge Díaz’s shot rattled the crossbar from the right side of the box before the ricochet fell to Vega on the left side, but his follow-up attempt also hit the crossbar and stayed out.
Frei made a double save in the 45th minute when he first denied Érick Guttiérez’s initial shot and then kept out Vega’s follow-up attempt on the rebound.
Toluca peppered the Sounders’ box to start the second half but couldn’t put any dangerous efforts on target.
Snyder Brunell unleashed a shot from the top of the box in the 57th minute that forced García to go to ground on a shot he couldn’t quite corral before pouncing on the loose ball.
Frei came up with yet another gigantic stop in the 59th minute when he dove to deny a powerful shot from Gutiérrez.
Helinho found Toluca’s second goal in the 64th minute just three minutes after coming on as a substitute when he cleaned up a rebound on a shot from Vega that Frei couldn’t hold.
Gallardo forced Frei into a kick save in the 69th minute after Helinho’s initial free kick from the top of the box was blocked by the wall. Gallardo collected the ball on the left side and looked to beat Frei low, but the Sounders goalkeeper used his legs to send it out for a corner.
Frei made another incredible stop in the 79th minute when he dove to his left to push Víctor Guzmán’s strike up and over the crossbar.
Sounders defender Ryan Sailor came on in the 89th minute for a cameo appearance, his first for the club since arriving this past offseason and battling a knee injury.
Viñas added Toluca’s third goal in the third minute of stoppage time after Frei saved Gallardo’s shot off the crossbar, but the Uruguayan international Viñas headed home the rebound.
