Tyrone Marshall heads a fledgling PDL team, Jurgen Klinsmann likes what he sees from the 12s, Bruce Arena stays with the Galaxy and Orlando City signs a third player already.
Tyrone Marshall has long had a desire to be a head coach.
Now, just over a year since he retired after 15 seasons in Major League Soccer, the former Sounders FC defender has his first gig as a head coach with the River City Rovers PDL team in Louisville, Kentucky.
“I’m very excited about the opportunity to join the Rovers organization,” Marshall said on RoversSoccer.com. “The potential for soccer in Louisville is tremendous and the vision Rovers has outlined for the future is something I wanted to be a part of.”
Marshall, 39, played 46 matches over two seasons with Sounders FC in 2009 and 2010, with his three goals and three assists making him the most offensively productive defender in the club’s five-year MLS history. In his career, he had 18 goals and 21 assists in 337 matches, winning the Supporters’ Shield once, the U.S. Open Cup three times and MLS Cup twice.
A two-time MLS All-Star, Marshall also had 83 caps for the Jamaican National Team.
Upon his retirement, he and his family moved back to his wife’s hometown in Louisville, where he worked to complete his degree at Lindsey Wilson College.
KLINSMANN HOPES TO EMULATE SEAHAWKS
The Seattle Seahawks’ stomping of the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII inspired notes of congratulations from around the world of sports and entertainment and even the traditional phone call from President Barack Obama. Among those well-wishes on Twitter was one from U.S. National Team Head Coach Jurgen Klinsmann and this week Klinsmann said he hopes to replicate the unique relationship that the Seahawks have with their fans when the U.S. goes to Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in June.
“One thing the Seahawks under the leadership of Pete Carroll have done terrifically well is connect to their fans. Their fans made a difference throughout the whole season. This is something we are trying to do as well for the last couple years, making it clear to our fans that they have a huge influence on the energy in the stadium in support of the team, through social media, through being there on game day or the night before doing pep rallies and tailgating at the game. We sense that,” Klinsmann said on USSoccer.com. “The entire environment sends us the energy of the fans and I think the Seahawks have done a wonderful job of that. We’re doing pretty well in that regard. It’s definitely something we need for the World Cup in Brazil. We need all the U.S. fans coming down and giving us big support for our challenge with ‘the Group of Death’.”
The U.S. is in Group G with Germany, Portugal and Ghana in one of the toughest foursomes of the Group Stage.
ARENA EXTENDED IN LA
After a year in which coaching changes became standard practice in MLS and only three Western Conference teams retained the same coach that started the 2013 season, the league’s longest-tenured coach and the second-winningest coach in league history, Bruce Arena, got a contract extension with the LA Galaxy.
Arena, who is entering his seventh season at the helm with the Galaxy and also serves as General Manager, is one of three MLS head coaches that have won the U.S. Open Cup and MLS Cup, along with Seattle’s Sigi Schmid and Sporting Kansas City’s Peter Vermes.
ORLANDO ADDS THIRD PLAYER FOR 2015
Orlando City SC is still 13 months from its first MLS match, but already the club has signed three players, announcing the third on Thursday in El Salvador National Team midfielder Darwin Ceren.
The 24-year-old holding midfielder joins Yordany Alvarez and Kevin Molino.
