Raney helped shape Yedlin

Saturday's Golden Scarf recipient Pat Raney was pivotal in the development of the Sounders FC Homegrown rightback.

In Pat Raney’s coaching career at O’Dea High School in Seattle, he won over 430 games, 14 Metro League titles and a state championship in 1990. During a career that spanned from 1972 until he retired in 2013, he had coached many of Seattle’s great soccer players, but the best of the bunch just may be Sounders FC defender DeAndre Yedlin.
So on Saturday when Raney was given the Golden Scarf before the Sounders topped FC Dallas 4-2, it was only fitting that Yedlin would present his high school coach with the distinction.
“It’s an honor to be the one to present it to him. You could see the joy in his face. He was very proud to get it,” Yedlin said. “I was expecting that he’d get it, but I wasn’t expecting that I’d be the one to do it. Getting that opportunity was amazing.”
Raney started his coaching career at St. Catherine’s in 1954 before coming to O’Dea in 1972. He joined the O’Dea faculty in 1991 as a chemistry teacher. The product of Gonzaga High School and Seattle Prep graduated from Seattle University.
In addition to Yedlin, Raney has also coached MLS Pool Goalkeeper Doug Herrick and Sounders FC Academy defender Jalen Markey.
As a Golden Scarf recipient he joins the ranks of other local soccer legends like Jimmy Gabriel, Mike Ryan, Alan Hinton, Cliff McCrath, Pete Fewing and Kasey Keller.
