“The combination that is irresistible.”
Those were the words of Ross Fletcher, the voice of Sounders FC, after Clint Dempsey found Obafemi Martins for the game-winning goal at Chivas USA on April 19. Two weeks earlier, Martins assisted on a pair of Dempsey goals as the Rave Green came from behind to earn a draw at Portland.
In the first full season of Martins and Dempsey playing alongside each other in Seattle, the two forwards produced magic time and time again.
Both finished the 2014 regular season with double-digit goals and assists. They each broke the club single-season scoring record, and Sounders FC notched the most goals of its six years in MLS. A combination play between Dempsey and Martins created 14 goals in all competitions.
No wonder they raved about playing with each other throughout the season.
Martins and Dempsey are both under contract for the next three years, meaning much of the same is in store for Seattle. Fans can look forward to plenty of backflips and back heels in the future.
