Sounders FC fell 3-1 to the LA Galaxy at the StubHub Center on Sunday. Despite its loss, the club remains in the final postseason spot in the Western Conference with 10 games left in the regular season.
The Rave Green were without several regular starters for the match, including Clint Dempsey, Obafemi Martins and Osvaldo Alonso. They could be at full strength for next weekend’s game against Orlando City SC, with recent signings Nelson Valdez and Andreas Ivanschitz potentially ready to make their debuts.
Here’s what Head Coach Sigi Schmid and his players said after Sunday’s match.
Sigi Schmid:
“I thought we performed well. I thought the team went out there and played well. …I thought we made them work for everything they got. I’m a little disappointed with the goals we gave up, and a little disappointed with a couple of goals that we should have had and didn't do well enough with chances. Goals change games. I thought for the first 45 minutes, the team was very good.”
Zach Scott:
“The one thing that we are trying to do, and trying to hang our hats on, is playing these games through, a full 90 with max effort. It's tough: The group is thin and we have players going down left and right after scoring goals for crying out loud. …We are not out of the playoffs. Our look is towards the horizon and we got guys returning. We have a tough stretch here with a bunch of games coming up very quickly, so we are hopefully going to get some guys coming in, get a little healthy and hopefully make a run.”
Andy Rose:
“I thought the effort was certainly there from everybody. It was a hot day against a very good, possession-based team. There is a lot of chasing, a lot of running and a lot of hard work out there, so we are certainly proud of that. We are up against that part of the season where need to start picking up points, getting wins and making sure you are in the playoff picture. That is the main focus now.”
