Seattle Sounders midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro logged 60 minutes for Uruguay in La Celeste’s 1-0 loss to Argentina in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas on Thursday. Cristian Rodriguez replaced Lodeiro as Uruguay's first substitution.
Lionel Messi scored the match’s lone goal in the 43rd minute on a deflected shot from the top of the 18-yard-box. Argentina, who were reduced to 10 men just before halftime after Paulo Dybala received a second yellow card, took sole possession of first place in qualifiers with 14 points, while Uruguay sit tied for second with Colombia and Ecuador on 13 points.
Uruguay will try and rebound on Tuesday in a match with Paraguay at the Estadio Centenary in Montevideo.
Lodeiro is one of six Sounders competing in World Cup qualifiers over the international break, joining Jordan Morris (United States), Roman Torres (Panama), Joevin Jones (Trinidad and Tobago) and Oalex Anderson and S2 forward Myron Samuel (St. Vincent and the Grenadines).
Earlier on Thursday, Lodeiro was voted as August’s Etihad Airways MLS Player of the Month.
