SEATTLE, WASH. – During pre-match ceremonies for tomorrow’s match between Sounders FC and the Portland Timbers, new Seattle midfielder Léo Chú is set to be unveiled to the hometown crowd. A promising 21-year-old attacker that can play multiple positions, Chú comes to the Emerald City from storied Brazilian club Grêmio and signed with Sounders FC on August 5. Chú will be presented with his new Sounders FC number 23 jersey by Senior VP of Soccer & Sporting Director Craig Waibel in the southeast corner of the field prior to kickoff tomorrow.
Known for his pace and attacking ability, Chú is capable of playing attacking midfield or on the wing, where he has featured primarily for Grêmio on the left. Chú has made 38 professional appearances for the Porto Alegre side and on loan for fellow Brazilian club Ceará Sporting Club between 2019 and 2021, recording five goals across all competitions. He is the first player to be acquired by Sounders FC using the league’s new U-22 player initiative.
Sounders FC’s match vs. Portland provides the finale of tomorrow’s Side by Side: The PNW Experience, highlighted by an epic doubleheader that sees both Seattle and Portland’s men’s and women’s professional teams play at the same venue on the same day in a single-ticketed experience. OL Reign takes on Portland Thorns FC at 4:00 p.m. PT, followed by Sounders FC vs. Portland Timbers at 7:30 p.m. PT. Beyond the excitement of this day of classic Pacific Northwest rivalry on the pitch, the Rave Green are celebrating the life and legacy of Jimi Hendrix, with special matchday elements to enjoy, including three live music stages located throughout the stadium, spotlighting both established and up-and-coming local artists.
