Montreal Impact 2, Seattle Sounders 2: Will Bruin picks up first Sounders goal, seals first point of 2017

Forward Will Bruin scored a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer, salvaging a 2-2 draw for the Seattle Sounders in their road matchup with the Montreal Impact at Olympic Stadium on Saturday.

Seattle looked to be headed for a second straight defeat to start their 2017 campaign following last week’s 2-1 loss to the Houston Dynamo but Bruin cashed home a desperation cross from midfielder Cristian Roldan in the waning moments of added time allowing the Sounders to escape with the improbable point.

Ignacio Piatti and Matteo Mancosu each netted to pace the hosts, while midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro scored on an 82nd-minute penalty kick for Seattle’s other goal.

Midfielder Harry Shipp—making his first start with Seattle after spending last season playing for the Impact—almost put the Sounders on the board in the sixth minute after he ran onto a through ball from Lodeiro and sent in a cross in the direction of forward Jordan Morris. But Morris couldn’t quite corral Shipp’s feed and the attempt went over the crossbar.

Montreal jumped on top in the 17th minute off a feed Piatti that found Mancosu streaking in on goal. Mancosu dribbled around Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei and tapped the finish into the net, giving the Impact an early 1-0 advantage.

Piatti would double the lead for Montreal just after second-half kickoff, teeing up a distance shot that he slotted past the outstretched arms of a diving Frei, putting Seattle into the 2-0 hole for a second consecutive game.

That scoreline would hold until the 82nd minute after substitute Oniel Fisher charged into the Montreal penalty box and drew a foul on Impact defender Laurent Ciman, giving Lodeiro a look from the spot that he converted to make it 2-1.

The Sounders looked to have an equalizer shortly before Bruin’s heroics after Morris and forward Clint Dempsey combined for a sequence that ended with Dempsey slotting a shot past Bush. But Morris was whistled for a handball by referee Jair Marrufo and the goal was waived off, although Bruin’s equalizer would render it a moot point.

With the road point in hand, the Sounders move to 0-1-1 on the season ahead of their next match–their home opener against the New York Red Bulls at CenturyLink Field on March 19 (TICKETS).
