Sounders FC advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after defeating Louisville City FC via penalty kicks on Wednesday evening at Starfire Stadium. Following a 2-2 draw in regulation and 30 minutes of extra time, goalkeeper Andrew Thomas made three saves in the penalty shootout before converting the final spot-kick of the evening himself to seal the victory for the Rave Green. Paul Rothrock and Danny Musovski scored goals on either side of halftime for the hosts before Louisville stormed back to even the score and force extra time.
Brian Schmetzer’s side is now set to face Phoenix Rising FC in the Round of 16, following the USL Championship side’s 2-1 win over North Carolina FC this evening. Seattle returns to MLS regular-season action against archrival Portland Timbers on Sunday, May 12 at Providence Park (1:30 p.m. PT / Apple TV – Watch Free, FOX, 93.3 KJR FM, El Rey 1360 AM).
