MLS Regular Season
Score: Sounders FC 0 vs. Sporting Kansas City 0
Site: CenturyLink Field
Man of the Match: Coming off a stellar individual performance against Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Osvaldo Alonso controlled the middle of the pitch once again on Saturday. Alonso made a number of key tackles, kept a talented group of Sporting KC midfielders in check and was accurate on his passing, per usual.
Telling Stat: The Sounders were dominant throughout the match in terms of keeping the ball and putting pressure on Sporting KC’s backline. Seattle finished with 65 percent of possession and more shots than SKC, but just one of the club’s 10 attempts landed on target.
Clint Dempsey’s streak of 10 straight matches with a goal or an assist – the longest in MLS since 1998 and tied for the fourth longest in league history – came to an end Saturday.
What You Missed:Stefan Frei is now tied for the most shutouts in MLS, recording his sixth clean sheet of the season on Saturday and making three saves to add to his league-high total of 44. Frei made a clutch save in stoppage time on an SKC long-distance shot from Benny Feilhaber that was headed for the top corner.
So What: Sounders FC is now 6-3-2 on the season and tied for second in the Western Conference. These two teams will meet again in two weeks at Sporting Park, where Seattle has never lost a regular-season match. The Rave Green continues its homestand on Wednesday against the Colorado Rapids before hosting the New York Red Bulls next Sunday.
