Gustav Svensson and Sweden are headed to the 2018 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals.
In a tightly contested matchup between two European sides, Sweden rode a second-half goal from Emil Forsberg to defeat Switzerland 1-0 in Saint Petersburg and clinch their first quarterfinal berth at a FIFA World Cup since 1994.
Svensson earned his first start of the World Cup and played the full 90 minutes in defensive midfield, squashing various Swiss attacks and blocking several shot attempts. Svensson is the last MLS player remaining in the tournament.
Sweden now awaits the winner of Colombia vs. England later on Tuesday. The quarterfinal will take place on Saturday, July 7, at 7 a.m. PT from Samara Arena in Samara.
