RENTON, WASH. – Sounders FC today announced the finalists for the second-ever ballot of the Eternal Sounders Circle of Legends, an exclusive honor for those that have distinguished themselves as the greatest players, coaches and builders in Sounders history. Following a thorough candidate review process by the Nomination Committee in keeping with the Circle of Legends eligibility criteria, this year’s ballot is comprised of four individuals whose contributions have shaped the legacy of the club: Osvaldo Alonso (Player category), Mike England (Player category), Gary Wright (Builder category) and Pepe Fernandez (Builder category).

With the nomination process now complete, the Selection Electorate – comprised of all Sounders FC Alliance members and Alliance Council representatives, Sounders alumni of all eras, Sounders FC ownership and staff, along with Seattle soccer media – now votes on all four individuals for final induction. Voting is open from October 12 – November 7, with Alliance Members casting their votes as part of the Sounders Ballot, which launches on Monday and also includes the General Manager Vote and proposed updates to the Alliance Council Constitution.

Voting is being conducted onsite at Sounders FC’s three remaining home matches – October 17 vs. CF Montréal, October 28 vs. Houston Dynamo and November 7 vs. LAFC – and online through a Sounders FC-provided digital ballot, with further details surrounding the Sounders Ballot launch forthcoming on club channels. In keeping with the club’s Democracy in Sports ethos, for every seat on an Alliance Member’s account, a commensurate level of votes is assured (i.e. one seat, one vote).

Democracy in Sports has been a foundational principle of Sounders FC since its inception as a Major League Soccer franchise, giving supporters a meaningful voice in the direction and traditions of the organization. That ethos extends to the Eternal Sounders Circle of Legends, with the greater Sounders community playing an active role in determining who receives the club’s highest honor. Through a thorough and multi-faceted nomination and selection process, the Circle of Legends ensures that those who shaped the legacy of the club are recognized by the community they impacted.

The four finalists have a chance to join Kasey Keller (Player), Sigi Schmid (Coach) and Jimmy Gabriel (Builder), who were inducted this past July as the first individual members of the Eternal Sounders Circle of Legends. The trio joined the inaugural 1974 Sounders NASL team, which became the first entry in June of 2024 as part of the club’s 50th Anniversary celebration.

OSVALDO ALONSO – PLAYER

A member of Sounders FC’s inaugural MLS squad in 2009, Alonso spent 10 seasons in Seattle, establishing himself as one of the league’s most dominant defensive midfielders. Known as “The Honey Badger” for his tenacious playing style, the longtime captain helped the club capture six major trophies: four Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups (2009-2011, 2014), the 2014 Supporters’ Shield and 2016 MLS Cup. A 2012 MLS Best XI selection, Alonso earned four consecutive MLS All-Star selections (2011-2014) and five Sounders FC MVP honors (2010-2013, 2016), both club records in the MLS era. With 339 appearances in Rave Green across all competitions, he ranks fourth in Sounders history across all eras, trailing only Stefan Frei, Cristian Roldan and Zach Scott.

Combining elite ball-winning ability with exceptional distribution to anchor the midfield, Alonso consistently ranked among MLS’ leaders in completed passes and tackles during his early years in Seattle. His standout 2016 campaign saw him lead the league in completed passes, tackles won and duels won, helping propel Sounders FC to its first MLS Cup championship. Born in Cuba, Alonso defected while representing his country at the 2007 Concacaf Gold Cup in the United States, eventually obtaining his U.S. citizenship in 2012. In 2024, he returned to sign a ceremonial one-day contract and retire as a Sounder.

MIKE ENGLAND – PLAYER

A Welsh international and veteran of English football, England anchored the Sounders defense from 1975-1979, recording 106 appearances and six goals. The commanding centerback earned NASL All-Star First Team honors in four consecutive seasons (1975-1978), helping Seattle capture the Pacific Conference title before facing Pelé’s New York Cosmos in Soccer Bowl ’77. In 2014, England was a unanimous selection to the All-Time NASL Sounders Best XI.

Prior to his arrival in Seattle, England made more than 450 league appearances for Blackburn Rovers and Tottenham Hotspur, helping Spurs win the FA Cup, two League Cups and the UEFA Cup. He recorded 44 caps and four goals for Wales, holding the distinction as the country’s youngest-ever permanent captain until Aaron Ramsey in 2011. England later served as manager of the Welsh National Team from 1980-1988, was awarded the title of MBE for his services to Welsh football in 1984 and was inducted into Tottenham Hotspur’s Hall of Fame in 2013.

GARY WRIGHT – BUILDER

An esteemed Seattle sports executive for more than four decades, Wright helped spearhead one of the most successful franchise launches in American sports history as Sounders FC’s Senior Vice President of Business Operations. Joining the organization in 2008, he played a central role in establishing the club’s identity, building its connection with fans and creating the foundation for its early success on and off the field. Seattle set an MLS attendance record with an average of 30,897 fans in its inaugural season, earning Wright the 2009 Doug Hamilton MLS Executive of the Year Award. Sounders FC was named Professional Sports Team of the Year by Sports Business Journal in 2010 and led MLS in attendance in each of its first eight seasons (2009-2016).

Wright helped establish the standards of professionalism, fan engagement and organizational culture that defined Sounders FC’s early years and remain central to the club today. Through his leadership and relationships with leading international clubs, he elevated Seattle’s standing as a soccer destination, helping pave the way for the city to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He received Executive of the Year honors for 2011 at the 77th annual Seattle Sports Commission Sports Star of the Year Awards and continued serving the club as a consultant following his retirement. Prior to joining Sounders FC, Wright spent 32 years with the Seattle Seahawks, beginning with their inaugural season in 1976. The Seahawks named the Lumen Field press box in his honor upon his retirement in 2008, and he received the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s inaugural Award of Excellence in 2022.

PEPE FERNANDEZ – BUILDER

A member of the original 1974 Sounders squad, Fernandez became one of the club’s most beloved ambassadors, helping build its connection with the community and grow soccer throughout Washington. During his first three years with the NASL Sounders, youth soccer participation grew by 82% statewide. The Uruguayan forward’s infectious enthusiasm extended far beyond the pitch, as he introduced the game to young players through school visits, free clinics and community appearances across the Puget Sound region, rural communities and Tribal communities. Often bringing his guitar and weaving music into his instruction, Fernandez made soccer approachable and engaging for new audiences, helping cultivate the grassroots support that became central to the Sounders’ identity.

A two-time NASL Best XI selection and the league’s 1969 MVP with Kansas City, Fernandez returned to play for the Sounders during the 1981-1982 NASL indoor season, while his commitment to developing the game continued through coaching, youth camps and investments in local soccer facilities. He served as an assistant coach with FC Seattle and its City League development program, while his Pepe’s School of Soccer camps introduced generations of Snohomish County players to the sport. In 1984, Fernandez and Walter Schmetzer Sr., father of Sounders FC Head Coach Brian Schmetzer, opened the Everett Soccer Dome, providing a year-round home for players of all ages for decades. Fernandez made Everett his home and devoted his lasting influence to building the region’s soccer community.

NOMINATION & SELECTION PROCESS

Born of the club’s Democracy in Sports ethos, the Eternal Sounders Circle of Legends nomination and selection process give a voice to the greater Sounders community to immortalize the best to ever wear the shield. Using the eligibility criteria for each of the categories – Players, Coaches and Builders (recognizing those with a significant impact off the pitch) – the Nomination Committee compiled the final ballot for submission to the larger Selection Electorate.

As part of the Selection Electorate, each of the following groups below is entitled to a voting bloc in the final selection process:

  • Alliance members (25 percent)
  • Sounders alumni (20 percent)
  • Alliance Council (15 percent)
  • Sounders FC ownership (15 percent)
  • Seattle soccer media (15 percent)
  • Sounders FC staff (10 percent)

Nominees must meet a threshold of 75 percent of the total vote to advance to the induction stage in their respective categories. Individuals can remain on the nomination list for three years, and there are mechanisms in place to re-enter the ballot under certain circumstances, guided by the Nomination Committee.
