The inaugural edition of the expanded 2023 Leagues Cup is almost here!
A joint venture between Major League Soccer and Liga MX, this newly reimagined tournament brings together every club from both leagues for a thrilling World Cup-style competition.
Here are some fast facts about Leagues Cup:
• The top three finishers in the tournament secure a berth in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup, which is an expanded and revamped version of the traditional Concacaf Champions League.
• The 29 MLS clubs and 18 Liga MX clubs have been placed into 15 groups of three teams based upon 2022 league standings and geographic locations. The 2022 champions for MLS (LAFC) and Liga MX (Pachuca) receive a bye to the Knockout Rounds.
• The Sounders have been placed into West 2 alongside MLS counterparts Real Salt Lake (July 22 at 6:30 p.m. PT; MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, 93.3 KJR FM, El Rey 1360AM) and Liga MX powerhouse C.F. Monterrey (July 30 at 6:00 p.m. PT (Watch FREE on Apple TV, FS1, UniMás, 93.3 KJR FM, El Rey 1360AM | TICKETS)
• The top two teams from each group advance to the Knockout Rounds. Group Stage games that end in a draw will be decided by a penalty shootout, with the winning team receiving an extra point.
• Should the Sounders advance into the Round of 32, they would face the winners of West Group 3 (Club Léon, LA Galaxy, Vancouver Whitecaps) or the runners-up in West Group 1 (Tigres UANL, Portland Timbers, San Jose Earthquakes).
• All 77 matches throughout the tournament will be streamed on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV. Select games will also be available on FOX’s network of channels, as well as Univision.
• The winners of the competition will secure a trophy, regional bragging rights, prize money, and spot in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup.
