ALL-TIME HISTORY: The Sounders are 12-10-8 all time against the Earthquakes, including a 9-5-2 record at home.
PREVIOUS MEETING: Seattle and San Jose played to a scoreless draw at Earthquakes Stadium in San Jose, Calif., on Oct. 18. Stefan Frei only needed to make one save in the shutout.
UNBEATEN STREAK: The Sounders have not lost to the Earthquakes in their last 12 meetings (6-0-6), dating all the way back to 2015.
HOME FIELD SECURED: While the Sounders can finish anywhere from first to fourth depending on results on Sunday, they have locked up a home match in the first round of the MLS Cup Playoffs.
STAT STUFFERS: Raúl RuidÃaz and Nicolás Lodeiro enter the final match of the regular season with a chance to finish atop the league lead for goals and assists, respectively. RuidÃaz, who scored a stoppage-time equalizer against the LA Galaxy midweek, has 11 goals in just 16 matches this season and is three behind LAFC’s Diego Rossi. Lodeiro, meanwhile, has nine assists, just one behind the Houston Dynamo’s Darwin Quintero and Toronto FC’s Alejandro Pozuelo.
THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT: Seventeen-year-old Homegrown midfielder Ethan Dobbelaere made his first MLS start and appearance against the Galaxy, continuing the influx of Academy talent to the First Team. He fared well, going 54 minutes and providing a much-needed rest for some of the older veterans heading into the end of the regular season and into the playoffs.
STILL STANDING: The ‘Quakes wrapped up a postseason spot with their win over LAFC midweek, completing an improbable midseason turnaround. They survived the worst defensive eight-match stretch in league history, which included a 7-1 defeat the last time they visited Seattle, to get into the playoffs for the first time since 2017.
WONDO BEING WONDO: San Jose forward Chris Wondolowski has scored three goals in his last two matches to buoy the ‘Quakes to back-to-back wins. The 37-year-old has added seven more goals this season to his MLS record of 166 in his career.
YUEILL BE MISSED: The Earthquakes will travel to Seattle without their star 23-year-old midfielder Jackson Yueill, who will be suspended Sunday after being sent off against LAFC on Wednesday. The fourth-year central midfield stalwart has started 21 of San Jose’s 22 matches this season. The only one he missed, coincidentally, was the 7-1 loss to the Sounders in September.
