Damian Roden to depart Sounders FC following 2019 season

Roden departure 8/6/09

SEATTLE, WASH. – Sounders FC today announced that High Performance Director Damian Roden is departing the club following the 2019 season. Roden, who joined Seattle prior to the 2018 campaign, will return to the English Premier League in an advisory role in sports science and medical performance. A search for Roden’s replacement is already underway and is being conducted by Sounders FC leadership.

“We’d like to thank Damian for everything he has done for our club,” said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. “He’s been an integral member of our technical staff and we wish him the best as he and his family transition back to the United Kingdom.”

Roden joined Sounders FC prior to the 2018 season as High Performance Director, overseeing all aspects of the club's fitness and sports science programs. Last season, he helped the club to a second-place finish in the Western Conference and Seattle’s 10th consecutive postseason appearance.

“I’d like to thank the city of Seattle and Sounders FC organization for two successful seasons in MLS,” said Roden. “My family has loved their time in the Pacific Northwest and it’s been a pleasure to work with this group of players, coaches and staff. I wish everyone the best going forward, but I am also excited for the next step in my career.”

Roden came to the Pacific Northwest from Stoke City, where he worked as the Premier League club's Head of Sports Science, helping the Potters to some of their best topflight finishes over those seasons in their 155-year history. Prior to his time at Stoke City, Roden held positions with Queens Park Rangers (2012-2013), the Football Association of Wales (2011-2012) and Manchester City (2008-2010).

Following a 3-2 home loss vs. Sporting Kansas City on Sunday, Sounders FC (11-7-5, 38 points) hosts the New England Revolution (9-9-6, 33 points) on Saturday, August 10 at CenturyLink Field (1:00 p.m. PT / JOEtv, YouTube TV, Univision-Seattle, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).
