Following the club's 2-1 win over the Portland Timbers on Sunday afternoon, Seattle Sounders midfielder Cristian Roldan has been named to the Major League Soccer Team of the Matchday for Matchday 13, earning a spot on the bench.
After conceding an early goal against the Timbers, it was Roldan who came to the rescue in the 19th minute to tie up the match. The California native took his opportunity at the top of the box and struck a driven shot from distance that deflected off a Timbers defender and into the back of the net.
Roldan played a hand in Raúl Ruidíaz’s game-winning goal. His line-breaking pass split three defenders and found Obed Vargas in a pocket of space, who laid then laid the ball off for Ruidíaz to finish first-time.
Roldan’s goal, along with his overall performance on Sunday, brought the momentum back to the Seattle side and ultimately pushed the team to gain three points on the road against a Cascadia rival.
The Sounders return to action on May 15 as they travel to Utah to take on Real Salt Lake (6:30 p.m. PT; Watch on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV) at America First Field.
