TUCSON, Ariz. — The year 2018 is already shaping up to be a big one for Seattle Sounders midfielder Gustav Svensson.
Before any competitive soccer even begins, Svensson will welcome his second child. Svensson’s wife is due any day, and although he was wishing it would happen in between preseason camps in Chula Vista and Tucson, for now they’re just playing the waiting game.
“Hopefully it will happen soon,” Svensson said. “I’m very happy that my wife is doing good. Two kids are going to be hard work, but very fun.”
This summer, Svensson has a chance to represent Sweden in the FIFA World Cup in Russia after helping the Blågult take down Italy in a massive upset in a home-and-home knockout round. He knows his chances to earn a roster spot depend on how he performs for Seattle and his form entering the summer, and he’s ready to make the most of the opportunity in front of him.
“I know all the travel, and those sort of things, so hopefully it will be a little easier,” Svensson said of his second year with the Sounders. “It sucked that we lost the final last year, so I want to go back to the final and beat whichever team we play there.”
