Tom Dutra
Club Director of Goalkeeping
A Sounders FC original, Tom Dutra was named the Sounders FC Goalkeeper Coach on December 29, 2008 and has overseen the club’s goalkeeping during its entire existence in Major League Soccer, leading to four MLS All-Star appearances and six finalists for MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, including one win. Dutra previously served two seasons as Goalkeeper Coach under Brian Schmetzer for the USL Sounders, and is recognized locally for his work in developing young keepers as well as training established professionals.
Dutra worked with retired Sounders FC keeper Kasey Keller for a decade prior to the goalkeeper’s return to Seattle, conducting one-on-one training sessions to prepare Keller for his return to Europe each summer. Keller finished his career with Sounders FC from 2009-2011, where he was a three-time all-star and 2011 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.
In addition to coaching Michael Gspurning in 2012-2013, Dutra trained Marcus Hahnemann in preparation for his return to MLS in 2012, where he set the record for the longest lapse between league appearances in MLS history (14 years and 39 days). Since 2014, Stefan Frei has set every Sounders FC career goalkeeping record, as well as earned three top-five finishes for MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and an all-star appearance in 2017.
In his time coaching in USL, Chris Eylander twice led USL-1 in saves and finished second in shutouts, and was also named the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Player of the Tournament in 2008.
At the amateur level, Dutra served two seasons (2007-08) as Assistant Coach for Saint Martin’s University and was an assistant for five seasons (2002-06) at Pacific Lutheran. He was Director of Goalkeeping for Washington ODP in 2008 and served on the state ODP staff from 2002-04. Dutra was the Goalkeeping Director for Washington Premier FC from 2001-2006 and also at Blackhills FC from 2001-2008.
During his time with Washington Premier, Dutra worked with more than a dozen goalkeepers who have played at the Division I collegiate level. Among those was Tally Hall, the starting keeper for two-time MLS Cup runner-up Houston Dynamo.
Dutra played four seasons in the A-League on the Sounders’ 1996 championship team.
Born and raised in Olympia, Dutra graduated from Timberline High School. He was a member of the U.S. Youth National Team program before sustaining a fractured leg. His career resumed in 1995 with the Oregon Surge of the USISL Pro Division.
Dutra is married to his wife Molli and they have two children, Tanner and Maggie.
